    The Rolling Stones

In 1960 it was Keith Richards who accidentally saw Mick Jagger on the Dartford railway station waiting for the train . Underneath his arms records of Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters were waiting to be heard. The two of them began talking and the common interest in music prompted a musical partnership for a lifetime . In March 1962 Mick and Keith read about  the Ealing Jazz Club and decided to visit the place where they would meet Brian Jones who was playing Slide for Alexis Korner's band Blues Incorporated . After meeting Korner, Jagger and Richards started jamming with his band . Blues Incorporated would also have Charlie Watts and Ian Steward as band members. Brian Jones was trying to get a band together and as Ian Stewart found a practice space he joined Jones to start a Rhythm and Blues band mostly focused on Chicago Blues. Shortly thereafter Richards, Jagger and his drummer friend Dick Taylor joined them . In June 1962 they played their first gig at the Marquee Club . The line up was Jagger, Jones, Richards, Steward , Taylor and Tony Chapman . According to Richards, when Jazz News asked Brian Jones about the name of the band he saw a Muddy Waters LP lying on the floor and answered with one of his tracks name '' Rollin Stone'' The material was Chicago Blues, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley songs. By that time Brian, Mick and Keith were renting an apartment in Edith Grove London. In December 1962 they met Bill Wyman and were quite impressed by his musical equipment . He joined the band shortly after they met . Charlie Watts was not only pursuing a career as a graphic designer but also played occasionally with Blues Incorporated and on gigs in Coffee shops with local bands and it was not until January 1963 till he finally agreed on joining the Stones. 19 year old Andrew Loog Oldham got interested in the band in would ask them to be their manager . The Stones accepted and Oldham would make quick changes in the band. He changed the name ''Rollin Stone '' to ''The Rolling Stones '', he would keep out the 's' of Richards last name and he would also remove Steward because he wouldnot fit the image of the band. Steward remained then, till his death in 1985 the Stones road manager.

Decca didn't want to make the same mistakes as with the Beatles and signed the Rolling Stones promptly with very favourable terms. Oldham who had no recording experience made himself the band's producer. The first single ''Come on '' and a UK tour as a supporting act with Bo Diddley , Little Richards and the Everly Brothers followed. During that tour a Lennon - McCartney number '' I wanna be your man '' was recorded . In June 1964 the band had their first US tour which was in Bill Wyman 's words a total disaster as the band had no hit record or anything going on for them. During the tour they were recording for 2 days at Chicago Chess Records where they would meet their Blues Idols including Muddy Waters . The sessions produced ''It's all over now '' which was the first Nr1 single in the UK . Little Red Rooster , a Willie Dixon blues cover which became surprisingly their second Nr.1 single .  As songs on the first US album '' Englands Newest Hitmakers '' were primarily covers, Oldham forced them to write their own songs. He saw it as a necessity to have a successful future for the band. A song for Marianne Faithfull ''As tears go by'' followed. The first Jagger/Richards Single for the Stones '' The Last time '' reach number 1 in the UK charts . Later Richards recalled :'' It was the bridge into thinking about writing for the Stones. It gave us a level of confidence , a pathway how to do it''. ''I can get no Satisfaction'' and ''Get off my Cloud'' followed as international Number 1 hit singles . Major success followed with their LP's Out of our heads and Aftermath in 1966 which was the first LP to have 100% Jagger/Richards compositions . In 1965 his role as band manager was taking over by Allen Klein . In January 1967 Oldham had his last venture as a producer of the band .

In the same year Jagger, Richards and Jones began to be hounded by authorities over recreational drug use . By that time the friendship between Brian Jones and Keith Richards got tense . The situation between Brian Jones and his girlfriend Anita Pallenberg got so unbearable to that point that Pallenberg left Morocco with Richards . Keith and Anita remained a couple for 12 years .  On 31 July Jagger was sentence to 3 months imprisonment for possession of amphetamine tablets. Richard was found guilty of allowing cannabis to be smoked on his property . He sentenced to 1 year in prison .  The next day they both were released on bail pending appeal . Later the appeals court overturned Richards conviction and Jagger's sentence was reduced to a conditional discharge.  Also Brian Jones was arrested and charged with possession of Cannabis. Jones was fined with 1000 Pounds .  The creational answer to all this was the single ''We love you '' which began with the sound of prison doors closing . It was also a thank you song to the fans who showed their loyalty .

Shortly after Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Clubs Band, the Stones answered with their psychedelic record Their Majestic Request. It became the first Stones album produced on their own.The Stones were focusing on recording new material . New sessions resulted the single ''Jumpin Jack Flash'' and the album Beggars Banquet which marked the band's return to their roots with its eclectic mix of country and blues inspired tunes. It was also the beginning of their new collaboration with producer Jimmy Miller. He describes that it was the best material what had been recorded before by the Stones. Keith Richards was a real ''work horse '' mostly due to Jones infrequent presence. Richards was experimenting with new tuning ( Open D and E tuning) which added a unique guitar sound to the record .
